Seit Februar 1974 ist die Trikolore das offizielle Nationalemblem Frankreichs, wie in der Verfassung der fünften französischen Republik festgehalten. Sie hat ein Seitenverhältnis von 3:2 und unterscheidet sich etwas von der Flagge zur See.

Bei dieser sind die drei Farben im Verhältnis 30:33:37 angelegt.

So erzeugt sie den Eindruck von drei gleich großen Streifen, wenn die Flagge im Wind wedelt.
