The WKF Series A in Salzburg Delivers Across the Board!
The WKF Series A tournament in Salzburg, held from September 13 to 15, showcased three full days of top-level Karate, with more than 1,200 athletes from 80 different nations competing in Kata and Kumite. Despite the rainy and cold weather, the enthusiasm of the athletes and fans remained undiminished. Although the venue wasn't the largest, the roaring cheers created an electrifying atmosphere that made the event truly unforgettable.
Day 1: Strong Start in Kata
On Friday, the German Kata athlete Jessica Vlai got off to a promising start. She confidently secured two victories but was defeated in the pool final by a strong Malaysian opponent. Nevertheless, her fighting spirit was impressive, leaving hope for future success.
Challenges in Kumite
The Kumite competition proved to be a true test of skill. Dora Fleischer from Hungary (+68 kg) and Brankica Negovanovic from Serbia (-61 kg) each won their first match but were defeated in their second. Florian Haas (-60 kg) and Sydney Yvon (-61 kg) were less fortunate, narrowly losing their opening matches and missing out on the chance for the repechage rounds.
Impressive Performances Despite Narrow Defeats
Mia Bitsch (-55 kg) delivered outstanding performances, winning her pool matches against Belgium, Scotland, and Ukraine. However, she narrowly lost her quarterfinal bout to a strong Polish opponent, 3:2. Similarly, Emina Sipovic (-61 kg) fought her way to the pool final but lost to an Austrian competitor, missing out on a spot in the quarterfinals.
Positive Outlook from the National Coach
National coach Noah Bitsch expressed his satisfaction with his athletes despite some narrow losses. He emphasized the valuable experience gained by the young German team and praised the tournament as excellent preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Venice this October.
Strong Presence from PUNOK
Beyond the sporting highlights, the PUNOK stand was a crowd favorite. The French distributor of PUNOK introduced two new athletes to the team: Yanis Tas (-67 kg) and Sami Tas (-60 kg). Additionally, Michael Dasoul (-60 kg) from Belgium joined the international PUNOK team, further demonstrating the brand’s ambitious expansion.
Despite challenging weather conditions and several tight matches, the tournament was a resounding success. The athletes gained important competition experience, and the event offered a thrilling preview of the upcoming World Championships.
